Supersize Me Please

This week in class we watched Morgan Spurlock's film where he ate only McDonalds for one month. This food is very unhealthy. It consists of processed meat, grease and fat. Spurlock was determined to eat only McDonald’s for a month to see what happened to him. Not only did Spurlock eat three meals a day, he also cut down on his exercise because the average American does not get that much exercise. The mass majority of American’s diet consists of fats and processed foods. Most Americans do not have a stable diet. A stable diet includes a portion of grains, fruits vegetables, meats, dairy and controlled amount of sweets. America’s population has an obesity problem and it might be due to the mass amount of the fast food restaurants. Recently restaurants like McDonald’s were sued because people thought they were the cause of all the growing health problems in so many young Americans. What did you think of the video?

I thought the video was really gross. I personally, do not like fast food. Whenever, I go to a restaurant like that I always feel sick after. I find it unbelievable that someone could eat only that food for so long. I would never put myself through that. He was constantly throwing up. He also said that the food made him feel sad or depressed. I find this ironic because people perceive the Golden Arches as happiness and the commercials are always are happy. I think that the people that are suing restaurants like McDonald’s are ridiculous. They know they serve unhealthy food, but continue to eat there. The McDonald’s Company is not trying to make Americans fat but to make a profit and cheap unhealthy hamburgers are a success so why would they stop? If it is anyone’s fault for why young people are gaining weight it is the parents. They control what their kids eat and how much exercise they get. These people need to take responsibility and realize they are doing this to themselves.

I’ve seen Super Size Me so many times the movie wasn’t too shocking to me this time. I feel like I’ve watched it every year in school since it came out. I’m not saying it was a bad movie because it is actually very interesting to watch and it never gets boring to me. I remember the first time I saw it, I was shocked by it. It was gross and like a lot of other people it made me stop and think before I went to a fast food restaurant. I don’t think Morgan Spurlock’s point was to make people stop eating fast food, I think it was just suppose to make people think. We are bombarded by advertisements everyday and they have a big impact on our lifestyles. This movie was just showing the impact fast food advertisements have on people. I don’t really understand how people could sue McDonald’s for making them fat. What proof do they have that McDonald’s made them fat? Also McDonald’s wasn’t forcing these girls to eat their food. I wonder where they got the idea that McDonald’s was solely responsible for making them fat and that they actually had a case against them.

This was the third time that I have seen Super Size Me. Since I had seen it before I was not very shocked by what we saw. How was Morgan Spurlock able to eat that food for a month straight? Not only was it hurting him physically through blood sugar and cholesterol gain but also doesn’t that food just taste bad after even the first meal? I know when I eat fast food I am hungry again soon after because of the low nutritional content of McDonalds food. The movie was very interesting to me to find out that Americans actually thought they had a right to sue the food companies because of their poor decisions. I think that the judge made the correct choice with pointing out the obvious that you can’t blame the food company for your obesity or eating issues. I think that ever American should see this documentary at least once just to know the facts. This documentary definitely plays through my head every time I go to order the fries or cheeseburger.
