The Tyranny of "Abercrappie"

Well studying American Advertising and how it effects our country we read an article called “The tyranny of Abercrappie”. The article was about a young boy that was probably around junior high age that was all about wearing the “in” clothing. All he wanted for Christmas was Abercrombie and Fitch clothing. His brother however was totally against wearing the clothing because of its brand name and what it meant to people. He knew that the brand label meant that you had the best clothing when it came to age group. Abercrombie mean that you wore the same thing as everyone else and you were not unique in the slightest bit. Then when Christmas came and the younger brother received his Abercrombie clothing the older brother began to like the cloths. He wanted some of his own. He shouldn’t pre-judge the clothing just because of its label. Next time he should just judge the clothing on if he likes it or not. People should not buy or not buy clothing because of its brand name. What was your response to the article? Do you ever find yourself just buying something because of the brand name?

When I was in middle school, I believed that you had to have the right brands of clothing. I know I went through a time where I felt I needed to wear Abercrombie and Fitch and other brands like Hollister. My sister is currently only into Abercrombie and Hollister clothes. In the article, the clothes are described as having quality. I disagree. These clothes are very expensive but poorly made. I have some clothes from these stores and they always get holes in them or faded. They are very overpriced. I think Brands like Ralph Lauren, Moosejaw, or American Apparel are better quality. I do not buy clothes just because of the brand name on them. In fact, I do not like shirts that say a brand name or words on them. I agree that the boy does not really like the clothes but he likes the label instead. He needs to realize that the brands one wears reflect who they are and how they act. He should not have to label himself and create a personality from the brand he wears.

The article about Abercrombie was entertaining but not very original. It seems like nowadays it’s trendy to not like Abercrombie and Hollister clothing. Everyone goes around saying how unoriginal their clothes are and how people who wear those clothes are like walking advertisements for the brand. I agree with this and I have never bought anything from either of the stores but it’s just that I have heard articles like this so many times. I do agree with what Allison said; the clothes at Abercrombie and at Hollister are not quality and it is more of a middle school trend now. I don’t think there was anyway the dad in the article could have convinced the boy not to like Abercrombie clothing. It is a trend that almost all teens go through no matter what people tell them. I think it is fine if the boy wants clothes from there, it’s just a trend, and maybe he will grow up and see how silly it is. I don’t usually buy things just for the name brand. I try to buy things of better quality. I won’t buy the clothing if I don’t like the style even if the brand name is suppose to be cool.
